Summary:     The manager is responsible for the design and implementation of systems that inspire and motivate the workforce to achieve top performance. A crucial member of the management team, the dairy manager is expected to contribute to strategic planning and continuous improvement of the business. The dairy manager hires, trains, schedules, supervises and evaluates dairy personnel.

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated success in agricultural operations management and personnel supervision.
  • Experience with financial management.
  • Capacity to run herd management computer software.
  • High level of time management skills.
  • Strong interest and experience in human resource management.

Duties:             

  • Schedule employees, work and tasks.
  • Interview applicants and make hiring recommendations.
  • Train new and current employees.
  • Communicate regularly with owners.
  • Develop with owners and then implement strategic plan tactics.
  • Provide the tools for employees; physical and mental skill training; and lead regular meetings.
  • Monitor, track and evaluate employee performance and make recommendations to owners.
  • Manage conflict and provide corrective measures for non-compliance.
  • Develop and implement incentive programs and systems for employee input.
  • Provide on-call support for operations and be ready to do any task needed for care of animals.
  • Coordinate management activities with herdsman.
  • Develop standard operating procedures and schedule for all positions.
  • Work closely with crop manager to maintain herd health.
  • Collect daily, weekly and monthly information on production, reproduction, culling, feed data.
  • Maintain records for all herd and business needs.
  • Maintain cleanliness of facilities, inside and out.
  • Project current and future needs and develop plans.
  • Access and report financial information requested by owners.
  • Plan and coordinate parlor maintenance.
  • Identify and evaluate areas that need to be upgraded.
  • Develop and monitor financial budgets.
  • Prioritize and present cost analysis for spending decisions.
  • Purchase and track inventory and supplies.
  • Stay informed on dairy market information and current technology, research with continued education.

HEIFER MANAGER: Fairvue Farms job opening

The Heifer Manager is responsible for the overall heifer management 1300 Holstein heifers on a growing dairy. Basic responsibilities include:

  • All aspects of reproduction including heifer heat detection, artificial insemination
  • Vaccinate, diagnose and treat any sick or lame heifers
  • Heifer pen inventory, manage and execute heifer pen moves
  • Work in association with veterinarians, nutritionist and other farm personnel
  • Farm vehicle operation, especially cattle trailer, skid steer, pay loader, tractor.
  • Record keeping using Dairy Comp
  • Assist in the development and continuous improvement of heifer farm protocols and procedures.
